Traditional Way of Life

Shakwak Valley for over 10,000 years. Stopover camps were established throughout the area of the Southern Tutchone people during the Indian seasonal migration in search for food.

"The community sprung out of a gold strike on Fourth of July Creek in 1904. Jacquot Post, as the place was named back then, was also blessed with an unbelievably beautiful panoramic view of Kluane Lake from the shore on the extreme north end."(The Whitehorse Star Visitor Guide`97, P. 14)

Tourism Development

"Burwash Landing...There is also the opportunity to develop a native "village" attraction emphasizing native culture and history, crafts, and tours by native guides. Kluane Tribal Council representatives have expressed some interest in pursuing this." (Kluane Region Tourism Development Plan 1989, P.7-13)

... It`s an ideal place to launch a boat and go for a quiet paddle on the lake. Boat rentals are available, as well as guided fishing tours.

...Today, Burwash is a favorite with wildlife and nature fans. Nearby hiking trails is a good bet for enjoying the great outdoors. A sightseeing flight over the glaciers will surely prove to be an unforgettable experience.

The Kluane Museum of Natural History is well known for its wildlife exhibits. Visitors will find it contains a wealth of information about the minerals and unique natural history of the Kluane area - much of it in diorama form. Also fascinating are the displays of native artifacts, and ceremonial clothing, fossils and 18,000-year-old mammoth teeth.

...In 1944, Our Lady of the Rosary Mission became the first church to be built along the Alaska Highway north of Whitehorse. The land was donated by Eugene Jacquot and supplies to build the mission were donated by army camps. The mission`s school and living quarters have been restored as a museum.

...Visitors will find a hotel, motel, service station, R. V. park, campground and restaurants on hand. Other services include a store, a Laundromat and a church." (Whitehorse Star Visitor Guide`97, P.14)
